A vast, sluggish mass of molten rock dubbed the North Atlantic Anomaly (NAA) is creeping beneath New England, slowly migrating southwest toward New York City. Geoscientists first detected this feature through seismic tomography, revealing a bulbous zone of anomalously hot, buoyant material about 350 kilometers wide, seated some 200 kilometers beneath the crust.

This underground phenomenon could rewrite a key chapter of Earth’s tectonic history. While Alfred Wegener’s continental drift theory explained how Pangea fractured around 200 million years ago, a recent study in Geology argues that the NAA was instrumental in splitting Canada from Greenland roughly 80 million years ago, acting like a thermal wedge between diverging plates.

Detailed measurements show the NAA spans between 350 and 400 kilometers across and lies nearly 200 kilometers below the Appalachian Mountains. Geodynamic simulations estimate its migration rate at about 20–22 kilometers per million years, an imperceptible pace on human timescales but monumental over geological epochs.

Researchers propose that this anomaly represents a Rayleigh, Taylor instability in the mantle, where buoyant rock ‘drips’ upward into denser layers, rather than simple edge-driven convection. This mantle wave behaves like a subterranean lava lamp: as the hot blob ascends, it lifts and uplifts overlying crust, providing the thermal support that has kept the ancient Appalachian range standing tall despite relentless erosion.

Despite its name, New Yorkers need not brace for imminent upheaval. The center of this hot blob won’t pass beneath Manhattan for another 15 trillion years, offering a stark reminder that our continent remains in slow-motion flux. Far from static, Earth’s interior continues to sculpt and reshape the surface in ways we are only beginning to understand.
