Can one avoid jihad due to worldly excuses?

I begin in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Alhamdulillah, by the grace of Allah Almighty, we are beginning Statement No. 14. Our aim is to learn and teach from the Quran and Sunnah, understand the rulings, reflect on history, and seek solutions to problems with divine guidance. May Allah Almighty make this statement beneficial and a source of light for all hearts.

Today we will be describe, That Can one avoid jihad due to worldly excuses?

The Qur’an and Sunnah make it clear that avoiding jihad due to worldly excuses is a sign of weakness in faith and, at times, hypocrisy. Jihad in Islam is not limited to the battlefield but includes striving with wealth, effort, knowledge, and the self. Yet, when the circumstances arise where Muslims are required to defend their faith, community, or uphold justice, avoiding this duty for the sake of worldly comfort or excuses is condemned by Allah. In Surah At-Tawbah, Allah exposes those who made false excuses when the Prophet (PBUH) called the believers to prepare for the difficult expedition to Tabuk. Allah says in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 81: “Those who remained behind rejoiced in their staying [at home] after [the departure of] the Messenger of Allah and disliked to strive with their wealth and their lives in the cause of Allah, and they said, ‘Do not go forth in the heat.’ Say, ‘The fire of Hell is more intense in heat’—if they would but understand”. This verse shows that those who avoided jihad because of worldly hardships, such as fear of heat or fatigue, were reminded of a greater punishment awaiting them if they continued in negligence.

Allah further warns believers not to let love of worldly life become an excuse for neglecting His command in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 38. “O you who have believed, what is [the matter] with you that, when you are told to go forth in the cause of Allah, you cling heavily to the earth? Are you satisfied with the life of this world rather than the Hereafter? But what is the enjoyment of worldly life compared to the Hereafter except a little”. Here, the Qur’an describes those who hesitate due to attachment to worldly pleasures as clinging to the earth, an image of laziness and weakness. The verse reminds them that the worldly life is temporary and insignificant compared to eternal reward in the Hereafter. Avoiding jihad for the sake of wealth, comfort, or fear of difficulty is therefore a dangerous mistake that jeopardizes one’s spiritual standing.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also strongly warned against abandoning jihad without valid reasons. He said in Abu Dawud, Hadith 2502: “If anyone withdraws from fighting in Allah’s path, Allah will cover him with humiliation, and he will not be relieved of it until he returns to jihad”. This hadith demonstrates that neglecting jihad brings disgrace both in this life and the next. Likewise, another hadith states Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1910: “Whoever dies without having fought or having thought of fighting, he dies on a branch of hypocrisy”. This shows that even harboring the intention and willingness to strive for Allah’s cause is essential, and abandoning it completely is a sign of hypocrisy.

However, the Qur’an also makes exceptions for those who have legitimate reasons, such as illness, disability, or lack of resources. Allah says in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 91: “There is not upon the weak, or upon the ill, or upon those who do not find anything to spend any blame, as long as they are sincere to Allah and His Messenger. There is not upon the doers of good any cause [for blame]. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful”. This verse clarifies that excuses are only valid when they are genuine and accompanied by sincerity. For example, the blind, sick, elderly, or those genuinely unable to support themselves financially are excused. But those who fabricate excuses to escape sacrifice, while being capable, are condemned. Allah says about them in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 46: “If they had intended to go forth, they would have prepared for it, but Allah disliked their being sent, so He kept them back, and it was said, ‘Sit with those who sit’”. This exposes the hypocrisy of those who pretended to have excuses but were in fact unwilling to sacrifice for Allah.

In conclusion, avoiding jihad because of worldly excuses such as heat, wealth, comfort, or laziness is a grave sin and a sign of hypocrisy, as highlighted in Surah At-Tawbah verse 38 and 81. The Prophet (PBUH) warned that neglecting jihad leads to humiliation and even dying upon hypocrisy (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1910). However, legitimate excuses such as illness, disability, or lack of resources are recognized by Allah, and such individuals are not blamed if they are sincere (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:91). Therefore, a Muslim must never allow worldly attachments to prevent striving in Allah’s path when called upon, for the true believer values the eternal Hereafter over the fleeting comforts of this world.

We conclude today's discourse with this humble supplication: O Allah, purify our hearts, accept our deeds, forgive our sins, and include us among Your grateful servants. Bless us in our time, our families, and our faith, and gather us under the shade of Your mercy on the Day of Judgment. Amen

Allah Hafiz
