What are the spiritual benefits of striving in Allah’s path?

I begin in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Alhamdulillah, by the grace of Allah Almighty, we are beginning Statement No. 13. Our aim is to learn and teach from the Quran and Sunnah, understand the rulings, reflect on history, and seek solutions to problems with divine guidance. May Allah Almighty make this statement beneficial and a source of light for all hearts.

Today we will be describe, That What are the spiritual benefits of striving in Allah’s path?

Striving in the path of Allah, whether through jihad of the self (jihad al-nafs), using one’s wealth, or even through combat when required, carries immense spiritual benefits that are repeatedly emphasized in the Qur’an and Sunnah. Allah makes it clear that striving for His sake elevates the believer, purifies the soul, and secures eternal rewards. The Qur’an says: “Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties [in exchange] for that they will have Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allah, so they kill and are killed. [It is] a true promise [binding] upon Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur’an. And who is truer to his covenant than Allah Almighty So rejoice in your transaction which you have contracted. And it is that which is the great attainment” (Surah At-Tawbah, verse 111). This verse highlights the first great spiritual benefit: striving in Allah’s path is not loss, but a divine transaction leading to Paradise, an eternal gain far greater than any worldly reward. For the believer, this sacrifice brings inner contentment and assurance that his efforts are recognized by Allah.

A key spiritual benefit of striving is the purification of the heart and strengthening of faith. Allah says in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 74. : “But those who believed and emigrated and strove with their wealth and their lives in the cause of Allah, and those who gave shelter and aided – it is they who are the believers truly. For them is forgiveness and noble provision”. Here, striving is described as a proof of sincerity and true iman (faith). When a Muslim sacrifices comfort, wealth, or even life for Allah’s sake, it uproots hypocrisy and strengthens reliance on Allah. This struggle teaches patience (sabr), courage, and detachment from the temporary glitter of the world, purifying the heart from selfish desires. The Prophet (PBUH) said: “The Mujahid is the one who strives against his own self in obedience to Allah” (Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 23958). Thus, spiritual benefit lies not only in outward struggle but in the constant inner jihad against sin and laziness, which shapes a stronger, more obedient soul.

Another benefit is the elevation of one’s rank with Allah. The Qur’an declares in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 20: “Those who believe, and have emigrated and strove hard in Allah’s cause with their wealth and their lives, are greater in rank with Allah. And it is they who will triumph”. Striving grants believers a higher status because it proves the depth of their devotion. While ordinary acts of worship are essential, striving demands more sacrifice and thus carries greater reward. The Prophet (PBUH) said: “Standing guard for one night in the cause of Allah is better than a thousand nights of prayer and fasting” (Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 2767). This shows that Allah multiplies rewards beyond measure for those who strive, because their actions benefit the whole community and safeguard the religion.

Striving also brings forgiveness and spiritual tranquility. Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 218: “Indeed, those who have believed and those who have emigrated and fought in the cause of Allah – those expect the mercy of Allah. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful”. This verse highlights the connection between striving and divine mercy. Through sacrifice, sins are forgiven, hearts are cleansed, and the believer enjoys Allah’s mercy in both worlds. The Prophet (PBUH) explained that even the smallest struggle for Allah’s sake does not go unnoticed: *“Allah guarantees that He will admit the Mujahid in His cause into Paradise if he is killed, otherwise He will return him safely to his home with whatever reward or booty he has gained”* (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3123). This assurance grants peace of heart, removing fear of loss, since every effort in Allah’s path is rewarded.

Moreover, striving for Allah’s cause develops unity and brotherhood among believers. The Qur’an praises those who support one another in this path Surah As-Saff, verse 4: “Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in a row as though they are a [single] structure joined firmly”. Striving teaches teamwork, loyalty, and sacrifice for the community rather than selfish gain. Spiritually, this nurtures humility and compassion, making the believer part of a collective striving toward Allah’s pleasure.

In conclusion, the spiritual benefits of striving in Allah’s path are vast: it leads to Paradise (Surah At-Tawbah, verse 111), proves true faith and purifies the heart (Surah Al-Anfal, verse 74), elevates ranks with Allah (Surah At-Tawbah, verse 20), secures forgiveness and mercy (Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 218), and builds brotherhood (Surah As-Saff, verse 4). The Prophet (PBUH) emphasized that even the inner jihad against one’s ego counts as striving, showing that every believer can share in these benefits by sincerely working for Allah’s sake. Ultimately, striving is not just about external struggle but a lifelong journey of spiritual growth, drawing the believer closer to Allah and securing everlasting peace in the Hereafter.

We conclude today's discourse with this humble supplication: O Allah, purify our hearts, accept our deeds, forgive our sins, and include us among Your grateful servants. Bless us in our time, our families, and our faith, and gather us under the shade of Your mercy on the Day of Judgment. Amen

Allah Hafiz
