Is Allah’s mercy available even after major sins?

I begin in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Alhamdulillah, by the grace of Allah Almighty, we are beginning Statement No. 7. Our aim is to learn and teach from the Quran and Sunnah, understand the rulings, reflect on history, and seek solutions to problems with divine guidance. May Allah Almighty make this statement beneficial and a source of light for all hearts.

Today we will be describe, That Is Allah’s mercy available even after major sins?

One of the most profound realities in Islam is that Allah’s mercy is greater than any sin, no matter how major it may be. While Islam considers major sins (kaba’ir) such as shirk (associating partners with Allah), murder, adultery, theft, drinking alcohol, and usury as extremely serious, it also emphasizes that the door of repentance remains open until death. The Qur’an and Hadith repeatedly reassure believers that no sin is too great for Allah’s forgiveness if the sinner sincerely repents. The question of whether Allah’s mercy is available even after major sins is answered decisively in the affirmative through the Qur’an’s promises and the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) teachings.

The Qur’an gives the clearest answer in Surah Az-Zumar verse 53, where Allah says: “Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.” This verse is considered by many scholars as the most hopeful verse in the Qur’an, declaring that Allah’s forgiveness is not limited to minor sins but extends to all sins including major ones if one turns back to Him sincerely. Similarly, in Surah An-Nisa verse 110 Allah says: “And whoever does evil or wrongs himself but afterwards seeks Allah’s forgiveness, he will find Allah Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” These verses establish that major sins are not beyond divine pardon.

Even shirk (associating partners with Allah), the gravest of all sins, can be forgiven if a person repents before death. Allah says in Surah An-Nisa verse 48: “Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.”* However, if a person commits shirk and dies without repentance, then it is unforgivable. This indicates that Allah’s mercy covers even the worst of sins as long as repentance occurs before the soul leaves the body.

The Qur’an also records examples of sinners whom Allah forgave. In Surah Al-Furqan verses 68–70, Allah describes those who commit major sins: “And those who do not invoke any other god along with Allah, nor kill the soul which Allah has forbidden except by right, nor commit adultery—and whoever does that shall receive the punishment. The punishment will be doubled for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein humiliated—except for those who repent, believe, and do righteous work. For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allah Forgiving, Merciful.” This verse not only confirms forgiveness for major sins like murder and adultery but also shows Allah’s immense generosity by transforming past evil deeds into good ones for the repentant.

The Hadith of the Prophet (PBUH) further reinforces this hope. In Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith No 7507 and Sahih Muslim Hadith No. 2751, the Prophet (PBUH) narrated that Allah said: “O son of Adam, if you were to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth, and then meet Me without associating anything with Me, I would surely come to you with forgiveness as great as it.” This Hadith makes it clear that even mountains of major sins are not beyond Allah’s mercy, provided the sinner approaches Him with sincere repentance and without shirk.

Another famous Hadith describes Allah’s joy when a sinner repents. In Sahih Muslim Hadith No 2747, the Prophet (PBUH) said: “Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His servant than one of you who finds his lost camel in a desert.” This imagery illustrates the immense love and mercy Allah shows toward repentant sinners, no matter what sins they committed.

Islam also teaches that repentance (tawbah) must meet certain conditions to be accepted. Scholars, based on Qur’an and Sunnah, explain these conditions as: leaving the sin, feeling genuine remorse, resolving never to return to it, and, if the sin involved the rights of others, restoring those rights. The Prophet (PBUH) said in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4252 : “Remorse is repentance” This shows that even major sins can be forgiven if accompanied by genuine regret and a commitment to reform.

However, Allah warns that delaying repentance until death approaches nullifies its value. In Surah An-Nisa verse 18, He says: “But repentance is not accepted from those who continue to do evil deeds up until, when death comes to one of them, he says, ‘Indeed, I repent now,’ nor for those who die while they are disbelievers.”* Therefore, although Allah’s mercy is vast, it is accessible only while life remains and the chance for sincere repentance is present.

In conclusion, Islam clearly teaches that Allah’s mercy is available even after major sins, as long as the sinner sincerely turns back to Him with repentance, faith, and righteous deeds. The Qur’an repeatedly affirms that Allah forgives all sins, even the gravest ones, if one repents before death. The Prophet ?’s Hadith further emphasizes that Allah’s forgiveness is boundless, and His joy over the repentance of a sinner surpasses human imagination. Thus, no Muslim should despair of Allah’s mercy, no matter the extent of his or her sins, for Allah is Al-Ghafar (The All-Forgiving) and Ar-Rahman (The Most Merciful).

We conclude today's discourse with this humble supplication: O Allah, purify our hearts, accept our deeds, forgive our sins, and include us among Your grateful servants. Bless us in our time, our families, and our faith, and gather us under the shade of Your mercy on the Day of Judgment. Amen

Allah Hafiz
