whether a Muslim can be a hypocrite without realizing of nifaaq?

I begin in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Alhamdulillah, by the grace and mercy of Allah Almighty, we are starting Statement No. 5. Our aim is to learn and teach from the Quran and Sunnah, understand the rulings, reflect on history, and seek solutions to problems with divine guidance. May Allah Almighty make this statement useful and a source of light for all hearts.

Today we will explain whether a Muslim can be a hypocrite without realizing of nifaaq?

In Islam, hypocrisy (nifaaq) is one of the most dangerous spiritual diseases, and the Quran repeatedly warns believers against it. A troubling question that many Muslims ask is whether a person can fall into hypocrisy without being fully aware of it. The Quran and Hadith indicate that yes, a Muslim can unknowingly adopt the traits of hypocrisy, even considering himself a believer. For this reason, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)? And his companions were very afraid of hypocrisy and constantly prayed for protection from it. The Quran distinguishes between hypocrisy in belief — which means outwardly pretending to be a Muslim while inwardly being a disbeliever, and which excludes a person from Islam and hypocrisy in deeds ( promises, laxity in worship). The latter does not exclude someone from Islam but is extremely dangerous because if it is not prevented, it can gradually lead a believer to hypocrisy in faith.

The Quran clearly describes the hidden nature of hypocrisy. In verses 8-9 of Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah Almighty says: "And among the people are some who say: We believe in Allah and the Last Day, but they are not believers. They deceive Allah and the believers, but they deceive not themselves, nor do they perceive it". This verse shows that the hypocrites do not even realize the depth of their self-deception. A careless Muslim, outwardly believing but inwardly disbelieving, is in danger of falling into a state of disbelief that he does not realize. Similarly, in Surah An-Nisa verse 142, Allah Almighty describes the hypocrites in prayer as follows: Indeed, the hypocrites deceive Allah, but He deceives them. And when they stand up for prayer, they stand up lazily to be seen of men and do not remember Allah. A believer who prays with the remembrance of Allah merely for show or out of habit may unknowingly adopt the behavior of the hypocrites.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has clearly warned that certain everyday behaviors are signs of hypocrisy. **In Sahih Bukhari (Hadith 33) and Sahih Muslim (Hadith 59), he said: There are three signs of a hypocrite: When he speaks, he lies. "When he makes a promise, he breaks it and when he is entrusted with something, he betrays it, an evil and insulting way" (Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 4688) The important thing is that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said that a Muslim may display some of these traits, but one of them is a disbeliever, he is a disbeliever. This means that a person may consider himself sincere but unknowingly adopt hypocrisy through character flaws and sinful habits.

The Companions were very afraid of falling into hypocrisy despite their firm faith. Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, whom the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) named among the hypocrites, once said: "People used to ask the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) about good, but I used to ask him about evil out of fear that it might befall me" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadeeth 360). Even Umar ibn al-Khattab, who was known for his steadfastness in faith, once asked Hudhayfah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), "Are you among the hypocrites?" This shows that even the best of believers were afraid of hypocrisy, showing that it is possible to slip into it without realizing it.

Another subtle form of hypocrisy is to display it in worship . In Surah Al-Ma’un, verses 4-6, Allah Almighty says: “So woe to those who pray but are heedless of their prayer, who show off their deeds” . A Muslim who prays outwardly but seeks the praise of people instead of the pleasure of Allah, cannot be aware of his hypocrisy. Is this action of his called hypocrisy? Musnad Ahmad (Hadith 23408), because it destroys sincerity, so no one pays attention to it.

It should also be noted that occasional weakness of intention or character does not make a believer a complete hypocrite in faith. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) assured that a person who struggles against hypocrisy, fears it and seeks forgiveness from Allah is not a true hypocrite, because his awareness and repentance protect his faith. In fact, fear of hypocrisy is a sign of true faith. As Allah Almighty says in Surah Al-Mu'minun, verse 60: “And those who give, they give while their hearts are afraid, for to their Lord they will return.” Scholars say that sincere believers worry about whether their deeds will be accepted, while hypocrites do not.

Finally, yes, a Muslim can fall into hypocrisy through unwitting intentions, laxity in worship, lying, breaking promises, betrayal, or showing off. Although this does not exclude him from Islam, it is a serious danger if not prevented. The Quran and Hadith remind believers to constantly renew their intentions, be vigilant, and pray for protection from hypocrisy. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) himself used to pray: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from hypocrisy and showing off” (Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 23408). Thus, sincerity, self-examination, and repentance are the shields that protect a Muslim from becoming a hypocrite unknowingly.

We conclude today's discussion with this humble supplication: O Allah, purify our hearts, O Allah, accept our deeds, forgive our sins, and include us among Your grateful servants. Bless our time, our families, and our faith, and gather us under the shade of Your mercy on the Day of Judgment. Amen

Allah Hafiz
