What would happen if God appeared to you in your bedroom and spoke out loud to you? I'm not talking about a dream or vision. I'm talking about you saw Him with your naked eye, and heard Him with your natural ears, and He spoke beautiful Words to you. Do you think you'd write those words down? Do you think you would hold them trembling? Do you think you would revere them as absolute truth? Do you think you'd let anybody talk you out of them, or tell you those Words didn't mean what you think they meant?
The Words of God are precious. There are too many references in the Holy Scriptures that God spoke concerning His Words to try to catalog here. Suffice it to say that the entire Bible is one big record of God communicating with humankind. A question often arises about those Words and how they are to be interpreted. Not always an easy to ask.
Some of the things The Lord has spoken are hard to understand, and some are easy. But one thing is important to remember, God says what it means and He means what He says. The devil on the other hand, maintains a goal he implemented from day one, to distort the very Words that God has spoken.
Enter translations of the Bible. God was wise enough (and generous enough), to make sure His eternal Words were Not only spoken, but written down for our permanent reference. It even says in the Scriptures that forever His Words are settled in Heaven. And concerning Jesus's speech, that Heaven and earth would pass away but His Words never would:
Psalm 119:89 ~
"For ever, O LORD, thy Word is settled in Heaven"
Matthew 24:35 ~
"For Heaven and earth shall pass away, but My Words shall not pass away."
So are we saying that the devil is so unintelligent, so lacking in foresight and evil cunning, that he would never try to corrupt the very Words of God? Of course he would. He's a liar after all. And what does a liar do but try to corrupt the truth, whether it is spoken or communicated some other way?
Remember on the Mount of temptation, when Jesus was tested 40 days as He fasted in preparation for His earthly ministry? What did the devil do then? He attempted to corrupt the Words of God, by actually quoting from Psalm 91 in a distorted way, and thereby hoping to deceive the very Word of God Himself:
Matthew 4:5 -6
"Then the devil took Him up into the Holy City, and set Him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, If Thou be the Son of God, cast Thyself down: for it is WRITTEN, He shall give His angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time Thou dash Thy foot against a stone."
Also remember the very first thing the serpent did in the Garden, was to try to alter the specific Words of God, and tell Adam and Eve what he thought they wanted to hear, rather than what they actually did hear, and what God had actually said. So of course the devil is going to attack and try to corrupt the Bible, which is the record of what God spoke. The Bible contains the Words of God. So are we saying that every translation is completely fine? And that the enemy has been entirely unsuccessful in his efforts to corrupt God's Words, and there is no corruption in any of them? Do we really believe that?
So maybe I will write a version of the Bible and tell everyone what I think it means. And then I can stand before the Lord and say that "This is the true Bible. This is what I believed to be true so, it must be." Of course that would be ridiculous. And yeah we put her confidence in there is human beings to do just that. My point is I think it's fine to read all of them. But I think it's also wise to make a distinction between someone's interpretation of what God said, and the literal translation of Words that God spoke.
It reminds me of the old telephone game we used to play. Where one person would start out saying a phrase, and it would be whispered into the ear of the next person. By the time it got all the way around the circle, it almost never was a true reflection of what the originator of the phrase spoke. Distortion happened. Jesus said one day we would be judged according to the words he spoke while he was on the earth. It is imperative then that we get those Words right.
I think God realized that through the many translations His word would be distorted. That's why we have Hebrew and Greek reference material like the Strong's Exhaustive Concordance etc. I think like God Himself, we have a tendency to want to make Him into our image. We want Him to be what we think He ought to be, not necessarily what He has stated himself to be. That's why we tend to emphasize some of His words over others. I think we do that unintentionally and annoyvfghingly many times. We want His words to say what we want them to say. Because his words are reflection of his character and who He is. We should at least be aware of our tendency to do that.
In these final days in which we live, it is becoming increasingly important that we both know, and understand, and believe in, the things God has spoken to us. Only his words will remain as the foundations of heaven and earth begin to crumble, and the works of man pass away. Spiritually speaking, we cannot even live without the words of God. We need to be cautious least we dilute them to where the power has gone out of them.
"In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the Word was God." (John 1:1)
