Internist and cardiologist Dr. Peter McCulloughâ„¢ told Steve Gruber that group purchasing organizations work as an oligopoly controlling drug sourcing and are responsible for drug shortages. Concentrated market share: small number of major players dominate the GPO market. According to Definitive Healthcare, Vizient, Premier, and HealthTrust Performance Group account for 80% of the affiliated staffed beds for the top 10 GPOs. This high concentration of market power is a defining characteristic of an oligopoly. When an inexpensive drug is scarce, GPO's gladly substitute a more expensive drug so they make higher margins.
