Livonia, MI - A stolen vehicle chase ended abruptly when authorities were forced to use a grappler device on Thursday.

According to the Livonia Police Department, officers responded to a stretch of highway to assist the Michigan State Police with a pursuit of a stolen vehicle.

Video shows officers deploying the grappler device to attempt to bring the vehicle to a stop.

The grappler is an innovative safety tool that fastens a high-strength net around a vehicle’s rear axle and tire, forcing it to a stop within seconds.

However, in the video, after being stopped by the device, the driver repeatedly attempts to dislodge the device by reversing and accelerating forward. This then caused the vehicle’s rear axle to be ripped off.

The police department specified that this is not typical with grappler deployments and is a result of the driver’s escape attempts.

The Livonia Police Department said that after the vehicle reached a controlled stop, they assisted in arresting the driver and two female passengers, who were then taken into custody without further incident.
