Chrystia Freeland was born in Peace River, Alberta. She studied in the United States, married a man there, and worked for a paper owned by one of the largest media corporations in both Canada and the U.S. While in the U.S., one of her uncles studied the Byzantine Empire — significant because its collapse marked the fall of Constantinople. The first Sultan of Constantinople was Mehmed II, and his great-grandson, Suleiman the Magnificent, became one of the most powerful rulers in history.

Why does this matter? Because Suleiman married one of his concubines — much like Henry VIII fell in love with one of his wife’s ladies-in-waiting. Both women came from the same region. Chrystia’s ancestor was born in this region to immigrant parents, and her family eventually became connected with Mark Carney’s family.

Both Chrystia Freeland and Mark Carney were born in Treaty 8 territory — protected land under the Royal Proclamation. That document forms the legal foundation for Canada’s government and its relationship with First Nations. The Crown has since stepped back, becoming more of a symbolic “mascot,” while corporations gained power through this legal framework.

Freeland’s bloodline includes both Treaty elders and the first Ukrainian immigrants to Canada (arriving in 1891, the same year Indian Affairs announced resources in Athabasca). Canada opened its doors widely to Ukrainians, even tailoring government services like welfare and food banks into Ukrainian and other languages as immigration grew.

Her family line traces back through political and economic power. Mark Carney’s family and Chrystia’s family were close geographically and historically. Both families produced figures tied to major political shifts — including Pierre Trudeau’s era (“Trudeaumania I”) and Justin Trudeau’s era (“Trudeaumania II”).

During the first Trudeaumania, Trudeau’s marriage fell apart, partly because they lacked strong bloodline ties to the people planted on this land.
