Most people are wrong answering this. Yes, factories* are closing in China because American businesses have stopped buying stuff from them. China’s exports are quite a big chunk of their economy.

(*I’ve listened to journalists in China reporting on factories closing down when DT put the tariffs at 145%. Not large ones but a number of medium and small ones. Unfortunately, there’s not much in the way of statistics. [Edit-though you can read the thoughtful comments of Jeff Duda below. Apparently, there is a period of adjustment and China in the big picture will do okay.])

Okay, so they are closing. But what does that mean? What it means is that there will be items that Americans were buying that you simply can’t get anymore. Suppose that around Christmas time, there’s a shortage of toys - and the prices of what is there is going to be sky high because of the demand and that there just aren’t toys there. (The US with 4% of the world’s population buys 40% of the world’s output of toys, 90% of which are made in China.) Empty shelves. Remember the lack of toilet paper during covid? There will be a number of products produced by them that will start to lead to either empty shelves or the prices are going to go way up.

7/29/25 Addition - The US has by far the world’s largest economy - not even close. So when America stops buying stuff, it affects Chinese factories. With over a billion people, even a small sudden drop of 1% production means a lot of people will lose their jobs. Plus, Americans love to buy stuff - and if stuff is not available or too expensive - they will stop, which means closing of businesses and stores. For the DT supporters this means the economy will shrink.

Meanwhile here in the USA, tariffs along with freezes on government funds allocated to food production and ICE deporting undocumented farm workers are causing small farms to go bankrupt. No worries though. Big ag will buy up that acreage and small farmers can work their fields as sharecroppers. Progress! 🙄

The total the US bought from China was about 14% of their total exports. If you include China’s production for its own people, the US accounts for about 2.6% of the GDP. The US imports have not gone to $0. In China, a lot of the factories are very specialized. The US does not use the metric system, so there were factories that pretty much just served the US, and those will be closing in some cases (although iPhones and such are being exempted since the US cannot produce mass produce high-end products). China also used to import a lot from the USA, and that is ending and will be supplied locally, which will cut the 2.6% in half, therefore a 1.3% actual loss. The rest of the world is now looking to buy more from China as the US is now thought of as unreliable. So other factories are producing more to meet the increasing demand. Therefore, an economy that was growing at 5.4% is dropping to about 5%. Compared to the US, which had a growth rate of 2.8% and is dropping by about the same amount, so it will be 2.3%. Pretty insignificant to China overall. Some factories that just served the US will close or change to serve other markets. USD is losing value, and US growth is slowing.

What needs to be remembered is that China is able to take the Heat and always has been able to take the heat. Suffering is not new to China. And even if the balance sheet is not in their favor they, like other nations, have pride. They will not roll over if they feel that they are losing face by doing so

The is a drop in growth so is a reduction in new jobs. It is a slowdown but not the end of the economy for China they have suffered much worse in the past and will do fine without the USA.
