Russia’s Wagner Group has quit Mali after more than three years, claiming its “mission is complete.” But a new report by U.S.-based watchdog The Sentry paints a very different picture—describing Wagner’s Mali operations as a “multilayered catastrophe.” The report highlights military failures, including a crushing defeat at Tinzaouatène, rising civilian casualties, and deep divisions within Mali’s junta. Wagner also failed to secure mining deals, leaving it dependent on Moscow. Now Russia has rebranded its presence under the state-run Africa Corps, tightening Kremlin control while Mali deepens political, military, and economic ties with Moscow.
