What are the signs of a hypocrite in Islam?
I begin in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Alhamdulillah, by the grace of Allah Almighty, we are starting statement number 2. Our goal is to learn and teach from the Quran and Sunnah, understand the rulings, reflect on history, and seek solutions to problems with divine guidance. May Allah Almighty make this statement useful and a source of light for all hearts.
Today we will explain what are the signs of a hypocrite in Islam?
In Islam, hypocrisy (nifaq) is considered one of the greatest spiritual diseases of the heart, which is more dangerous than open disbelief because the hypocrite pretends to be a believer on the outside and hides disbelief, weakness, or deceit on the inside. The Quran pays special attention to this topic, especially in Surah At-Tawbah, Surah Al-Baqarah, and Surah Al-Munafiqun, Where is Allah? It exposes the characteristics of hypocrites so that Muslims can recognize them and protect themselves. This is explained in Surah Al-Baqarah verses 8-9, where Allah Almighty says: "And among the people are some who say: We believe in Allah and the Last Day, but they are not believers. They deceive Allah and those who believe, but they do not deceive themselves, nor do they understand." This shows that hypocrisy begins with disbelief in faith where the tongue declares faith but the heart is not sincere.
A major sign of hypocrisy is laziness and negligence in prayer. Allah almighty In verse 142 of Surah An-Nisa: "Indeed, the hypocrites deceive Allah, but He deceives them, and when they stand up for prayer, they stand up lazily, to be seen of people, and they remember Allah little" (In Surah An-Nisa verse 14). Here Allah Almighty makes it clear that the hypocrite prays not out of love or devotion, but out of show, so that he may be seen by others and remember Allah little. Similarly, in Surah At-Tawbah verse 54, Allah Almighty makes it clear that their charity is also corrupt: *And nothing prevents their charity from being accepted except that they disbelieve in Allah and His Messenger, and that they do not come to prayer except because they are lazy, and that they do not pray when they do not want to. Thus, the hypocrite's worship lacks sincerity which makes it hollow and invalid.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has also described the signs of the clear behavior of hypocrisy. **Sahih Al-Bukhari (Hadith 33) and Sahih Muslim (Hadith 59), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: The signs of a hypocrite are three: When he speaks, he lies, when he promises, he breaks it, and when he is entrusted with something, four are added. "Even if he fasts, prays and claims to be a Muslim." (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 58) These hadiths prove that hypocrisy is not only a matter of faith but also of character. Dishonesty, treachery and suspicion are the characteristics of a hypocrite.
Another sign is the avoidance of jihad in the way of Allah. Hypocrites are often described as people who make excuses to avoid sacrifice, preferring comfort and worldly gain over faith. Allah Almighty says in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 81: Those who remained behind preferred to remain in their homes after the departure of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and disliked to strive in the way of Allah with their wealth and lives, and said: Do not go out in the heat. Say: Would that they had appreciated the heat of the Fire. (At-Tawbah 9:81) This highlights the cowardice and materialism of the hypocrites, who avoid working hard for Allah and find excuses to make up for their lack of determination.
Furthermore, hypocrisy is manifested in the constant mockery and ridicule of religion. Allah Almighty says in Surah At-Tawbah, verses 65-66: And if you ask them, they will certainly say, "Were we only talking and playing?" Say, "Were you mocking Allah and His verses and His Messenger?" Do not make excuses. You disbelieved after your faith." This shows that mocking or belittling Islamic teachings is a direct sign of hypocrisy, because mocking with the tongue and heart is an insult to Allah and His Messenger.
It is also important to note that there are degrees of hypocrisy. Scholars have said that there is hypocrisy in belief (hypocrisy of belief) which is outside of Islam and hypocrisy in action (general hypocrisy) which does not exclude someone from Islam but resembles the characteristics of hypocrites, such as lying, breaking promises. The Prophet (PBUH) Sunan Abu Dawud (Hadith 4688) warns: Whoever has the following four characteristics is a pure hypocrite, and whoever has even one of them has the characteristic of hypocrisy until he abandons it: When entrusted, he betrays it, when he speaks, he lies, quarrels, and harbors hatred.
Finally, the Quran and Hadith state that among the signs of a hypocrite are: lack of faith Faith is also included. ziness in prayer, showing off in worship, insincerity in charity, avoidance of sacrifice in Allah’s cause, betrayal of trusts, lying, breaking promises, mocking religious values, and double-faced behavior. Hypocrisy is dangerous because it erodes the very foundation of faith from within while outwardly appearing to be righteous. True believers must guard themselves by cultivating sincerity (ikhlas), truthfulness, and steadfastness in worship, while constantly seeking Allah’s protection from hypocrisy. The Prophet (PBUH) himself would often supplicate: “O Allah, I seek refuge with You from hypocrisy” (Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 23408), teaching his followers the seriousness of this spiritual disease and the necessity of vigilance against it.
We conclude today's discourse with this humble supplication: O Allah, purify our hearts, accept our deeds, forgive our sins, and include us among Your grateful servants. Bless us in our time, our families, and our faith, and gather us under the shade of Your mercy on the Day of Judgment. Amen
