Enjoy!

This song was born of a real and recent moment in Canadian law that stirred hearts across the nation.

In Kawartha Lakes Ontario homeowner Jeremy McDonald was charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon after defending himself against an intruder Michael Kyle Breen who broke into his apartment carrying a knife.

You can read that story here:

The charges reignited a fierce debate.

In Canada unlike many U.S. states there is no Castle Law or formal “Castle Doctrine” guaranteeing immediate immunity for defending your home.

Instead the question is always “Was your response reasonable?” , and that judgment is left up to the courts after the fact.

Hindsight is always 2020, but a cornered father, husband or homeowner faced with fight or flight is likely to result in a fight!

Canadian Judges don't seem to agree from their company bench.

For background on Castle Doctrine itself:

In Jeremy’s case, the law failed to treat him as a victim of violent intrusion.

When a person’s sanctuary is breached, instinct demands protection for family and home.

For example, in nature the one who defends the cubs is the mama bear.

A papa bear does not stay with the young, but in human families the dynamic is different.

Mothers act as the mama bear defending their children and fathers are also vested with the role of protecting the household and family.

In this way both mother and father stand as guardians a partnership in protection that natural law affirms and that manmade law should respect.

In this song, God Over Gavel, you get both protest and affirmation.

It speaks from the foundational truth that rights come not from manmade law but from the Most High.

It challenges the blurry discretionary nature of Canadian self-defence law.

“God over gavel.
His Word will always stand,
supreme above the judges of this land.”

Ultimate justice is not handed down from earthly judges, it flows from divine authority.

“This house is my castle, my family I defend."

“No power made of paper can unwrite truth and awe.”

Why This Matters

Clarity in Law — When a criminal breaks in homeowners should know where the law stands not be subjected to vague second-guessing.

Protection for Families — A man or a woman should not fear prosecution for defending their children and home.

Deterrence — Clear laws discourage violent intrusions by signaling that defenders will not be punished.

Natural Justice — In human families both mother and father are entrusted with protection.

Our laws must not constrain that sacred duty.
Sanctity of the home is sacred.

Higher Authority — Our Constitution acknowledges God’s supremacy, our law should reflect His standards of protection and righteousness.
