Biography of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Part-1
Welcome to our blessed series on the Biography of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the greatest and final Messenger of Allah, sent as a mercy to all the worlds. His noble life is a light for humanity, guiding us in faith, character, and devotion. Because of the depth and richness of his story, we have divided this biography into four detailed parts.
In Part One, we will reflect on his blessed birth, the circumstances of Arabia before his arrival, and the signs that announced his coming.
In Part Two, we will cover his childhood and youth.
In Part Three, we will describe the moment of revelation and the early years of Prophethood.
Finally, in Part Four, we will journey through his last years, his Farewell Hajj, and his noble passing.
Today, we begin with Part One: The Birth of the Prophet (PBUH), describing the year he was born, the miracles surrounding his arrival, and the environment into which Allah sent His Messenger. Tomorrow, insha’Allah, we will continue with Part Two: His Childhood and Youth.
In the vast desert lands of the Arabian Peninsula, at a time when ignorance, idol worship, and tribal rivalries dominated the lives of the people, Allah Almighty was preparing the stage for the arrival of the final Messenger, Muhammad ibn Abdullah (PBUH). His birth was not an isolated event, but the culmination of centuries of prophecy and divine wisdom. The story of his blessed birth is not only the beginning of a man’s life, but also the dawn of a light that would illuminate the entire world.
The lineage of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is among the purest and most honored lineages to have existed. He was born from the noble tribe of Quraysh, who were respected custodians of the Ka‘bah in Makkah. His ancestry goes back to the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) (AS) through his son Isma‘il (AS). This lineage was free from the filth of unlawful unions, as the Prophet (PBUH) himself testified in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2276 : “Indeed, Allah chose Kinanah from the children of Isma‘il, and He chose Quraysh from Kinanah, and He chose the tribe of Banu Hashim from Quraysh, and He chose me from Banu Hashim.”. This narration highlights that the Prophet’s ? family tree was preserved with purity and dignity, preparing him to be the Messenger of Allah for all humanity.
His father, Abdullah ibn Abdul Muttalib, was a man of remarkable character and beauty, beloved by the people of Makkah. His mother, Amina bint Wahb, came from a noble family of the Quraysh as well, known for her chastity and wisdom. Together, they formed a union that would give birth to the greatest of all creation. Yet, before the Prophet ? even opened his blessed eyes to the world, his life was touched with trials. Abdullah, his father, died while Amina was still pregnant. This meant that the Prophet ? was born an orphan, never having seen his father’s face. This early test was part of Allah’s divine plan, for He wished to raise His Messenger free from the over-attachment to worldly ties, relying only upon Allah.
The time of his birth was marked by extraordinary signs, both in the heavens and on earth. It was the famous “Year of the Elephant,” around 570 CE, when Allah protected His Sacred House from the attack of the Abyssinian ruler Abraha. The Qur’an itself immortalizes this event in Surah al-Fil verse 1-5:
“Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant? Did He not make their plan go astray? And He sent against them birds in flocks, striking them with stones of hard clay, and He made them like eaten straw.”.
This miraculous protection of the Ka‘bah occurred only weeks before the birth of the Prophet (PBUH). It was as if Allah was announcing to the world that the Sacred House was not to be destroyed, for soon the Messenger who would purify it from idols and falsehood would be born.
When the time came, on a Monday in Rabi‘ al-Awwal, Amina gave birth to her blessed child in Makkah. Authentic narrations indicate the date to be the 12th of Rabi‘ al-Awwal, though scholars mention other dates as well. The birth of Muhammad ? was unlike any other. Amina herself described that she felt a great light emanating from her at the time of delivery. This light illuminated the palaces of Busra in Syria, a distant land, symbolizing that the message of her child would reach far beyond Arabia. Ibn Ishaq narrates from Amina that when he was born, she saw a light that shone so brightly it lit up the palaces of Sham. This was a clear sign that this child was destined for a mission beyond imagination.
The people of Makkah rejoiced at the news of his birth. His grandfather, Abdul Muttalib, who was the respected chief of Quraysh, held the newborn baby with immense pride. He took him into the Ka‘bah, praised Allah, and named him “Muhammad,” meaning “the praised one.” This name was rare among Arabs, for they usually gave names of strength, animals, or harsh qualities to instill fear. Yet Abdul Muttalib chose a name that reflected praise and honor, almost as if inspired by Allah to foreshadow the future, for the whole of creation would one day send blessings upon Muhammad (PBUH). When people asked him why he chose such a unique name, Abdul Muttalib replied: “I wanted him to be praised by Allah in the heavens and praised by people on earth.”
Another remarkable event connected with his birth was that many signs of falsehood began to collapse. The fire that the Zoroastrians of Persia had worshipped for over a thousand years was suddenly extinguished. The grand palaces of Chosroes in Persia trembled, and fourteen of its balconies cracked and fell. The soothsayers and magicians of Arabia found their powers vanishing, as the devils that used to whisper to them were suddenly cut off. These occurrences bewildered the people, but those of knowledge understood that a world-changing event had taken place. The final Prophet, awaited by centuries, had arrived.
Muhammad (PBUH) did not drink from his mother’s milk alone, for it was the custom of the noble Arabs to send their infants into the desert to be raised by foster mothers in the clean and pure environment of the Bedouins. This was believed to strengthen the child’s body, teach them eloquent Arabic, and protect them from the corruption of city life. Among the many women who came to Makkah seeking infants to nurse was Halimah al-Sa‘diyah. She and her husband were poor and had struggled during the journey to Makkah, for their animals were weak and their provisions scarce. While other women overlooked the orphan child Muhammad (PBUH) because he had no father to reward them, Halimah’s heart was moved to take him.
From the moment Muhammad (PBUH) entered Halimah’s household, blessings poured upon them. Her weak donkey became strong and outran the others. Her goats, once barren, began producing abundant milk. The family, once in hardship, now enjoyed prosperity. Halimah herself testified: “We experienced blessings we had never seen before. Our animals grew fat, our lands fertile, and we knew it was all because of this child.” This was another sign that the Prophet (PBUH) was a source of mercy even as a newborn.
Amina would sometimes visit her child in the desert and was always pleased to see him thriving. She was aware of the special destiny that awaited him, for she had seen dreams that confirmed his prophethood. It is reported that she once saw a dream in which a great light shone from her womb, illuminating the lands of Syria. Scholars interpret this as a prophecy that Islam would spread far and wide, reaching even the distant lands of Sham.
The Prophet’s (PBUH) early life was thus surrounded by divine care and miraculous signs. Allah was shaping him through trials, beginning with the loss of his father and the separation from his mother during foster care. These early difficulties prepared him for the immense responsibility of prophethood, teaching him reliance upon Allah alone. As the Qur’an reminds in Surah Ad Duha verse 6–8.: “Did He not find you an orphan and give you refuge? And He found you lost and guided you. And He found you poor and made you self-sufficient.”.
Thus, the story of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is not just about a child entering the world. It is about divine planning, miraculous signs, and the unfolding of Allah’s greatest mercy upon mankind. It marked the beginning of the greatest transformation in human history. The baby who was born an orphan in Makkah would one day become the Messenger of Allah, the guide for humanity, the mercy to the worlds.
Alhamdulillah, we have now reached the conclusion of the first part of the blessed biography of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). In this part, we reflected on the noble birth of the Prophet ?, the miraculous events that surrounded his arrival into the world, and the environment into which Allah sent His final Messenger. Every detail of his birth reminds us that his coming was destined and that his mission was a mercy for all mankind.
But this is only the beginning of his journey. The life of the Prophet (PBUH) is a treasure of wisdom, guidance, and inspiration, and it cannot be contained in a single sitting. That is why we have divided this blessed biography into four comprehensive parts, so that we may carefully reflect on each stage of his life.
Stay with us on this journey of light.
