This filter was changed at a year or longer point. I do not remember the exact timespan for how long it went between changes. The housing (sump) should be hand cleaned with elbow grease and water. Then once that is complete a splash of un-scented chlorine (~.5 floz) can be used. Pressurize the housing (no water to be used downstream) and let stand for 5mins before either flushing through the pipes or removing and continuing to install the replacement filter cartridge. This well supply I would recommend staying with the sediment specific filter until or if ever, the sediment level dropped or placing another filter pre or post this one. If you want a carbon addition or a sand trap or spin down sedi filter. These pleated filters are reusable. Once this older one is out, it can be rinsed, dunked and submerged in a bucket for some time to knock off and clean it out. I would let it dry in the sun for UV exposure but don't forget it outside, too much UV will degrade it. Then when it is time to swap filters again use a small splash of chlorine (unscented) at install or the sani-solution packet. For well water consult your local conditioning expert for what type to use.
