.480 Ruger for Bear Defense

WARNING: Our friend had ordered Buffalo Bore Ammunition Ruger .480 Heavy .480 Ruger Pistol and Handgun ammo, 410 gr. In shooting it here, for the first time, the recoil, even for Randy, was exceptionally violent. The spent cases had to be hammered out of the cylinder, they had expanded so much. A very unsafe situation! Randy inspected the friends Ruger .48 Super Redhawk Alaskan, and there were no issues with the revolver. It was strictly a case [pardon the pun] of overloaded ammo. Our contact with Buffalo Bore Ammo, to date [8-30-25] has not been satisfactory. We got a link that points to "sticky" cases, possibly being caused with the revolver. Sticky? When a punch and hammer had to be used to get the cases out. The spent cases, once released, will only fit 1/2" into the cylinder. This is a very clear case of an over-loaded case.
Our friend left the Ruger here. To compare, we ordered, for him, at his request, Buffalo Bore Ammo Ruger .480 370 gr rounds. They shoot well, and there is no issue of getting them out of the revolver properly.
Randy shows a friend’s new leather shoulder holster, which Randy really likes. Enough so, he’s ordered one for his 480 Ruger, which he has, once again, modified.
Randy discusses bullet weight and performance, for best bear stopping use. We pray he never needs to use this for its intended purpose…live saving defense against a bear attack.
While the holster in the video is our friend’s holster from Diamon D Custom Leather, Randy’s holster, ordered for his modified Super Redhawk, will have a strap from the bottom of the holster to attach to his belt so the handgun can be withdrawn much more quickly and efficiently, without the need for being two handed as shown here. Our friend, wearing this higher on his chest, did not need to do so. Randy likes to wear his lower. It all comes to personal preference.
