The Story of a Mother Who Gave Everything

In a small village lived a woman named Maya. She was poor, widowed, and had only one son. For her, the boy was not just a child—he was her entire world, her hope, and her reason to keep breathing.

Life was never easy. Maya worked in the fields during the day and stitched clothes at night. Sometimes she went hungry, but she always made sure her son ate. When he asked, “Amma, did you eat?” she would smile and say, “Yes, my child. I’m full.” But in truth, her stomach often ached with emptiness.

When her son grew older, he wanted to study in the city. Maya had no money, but she sold her only piece of land, the last memory of her husband. People whispered, “She is foolish.” But Maya only said, “If my son’s future shines, my life is worth it.”

Years passed. Her son became successful, respected, and wealthy. But in the rush of his new life, he forgot the wrinkled hands that once fed him by staying hungry. Maya remained in the same small hut, waiting every evening, hoping her son would return, hoping he would say, “Amma, I am home.”

One winter night, Maya grew weak. A neighbor asked, “Do you regret giving him everything?”

With her fading breath, she whispered, “No. A mother never regrets. To give everything—that is what it means to be a mother.”

And with a smile, she closed her eyes forever.
