Berkeley County, SC - A Berkeley County man is facing nearly a dozen charges after he fled from law enforcement Saturday night and crashed into a vehicle, leaving one person dead and another seriously injured, according to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.
Eric Gerard Parrilla, 35, of Mulberry Crossing Lane, is charged with the following:
* possession with the intent to distribute marijuana: BCSO
* two counts of felon in possession of a firearm: BCSO
* two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime: BCSO
* resisting arrest: BCSO
* failure to stop for blue Lights and sirens with great bodily injury: SCHP
* failure to stop for blue lights and sirens resulting in death: SCHP
* felony DUI with great bodily injury: SCHP
* felony DUI resulting in death: SCHP
* assault and battery in the 3rd : MCPD
The situation started when Berkeley County deputies were called to assist Moncks Corner officers around 10 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, about a fight involving a firearm at the Moncks Corner Walmart.
When deputies arrived, they saw the suspect, identified as Parrilla, fleeing in a silver Mercedes SUV. Deputies attempted a traffic stop, which Parrilla ignored, and a pursuit ensued.
The pursuit continued on N. Highway 52 and North Live Oak Drive before Parrilla crashed into the rear passenger side of a 2003 Infiniti SUV that was stopped at a traffic light near the intersection of N. Live Oak Drive and Highway 6, according to the sheriff’s office.
Parrilla then attempted to flee on foot but was caught by deputies shortly after. The passenger of the Infiniti died on the scene, while the driver was taken to a nearby hospital with critical injuries.
Berkeley County Coroner Darnell Hartwell later identified the victim as 45-year-old Robert Anderson of Summerville.
When law enforcement searched Parilla’s vehicle, they found marijuana and two firearms under the driver’s side floorboard, according to an incident report.
Deputies used surveillance video from a nearby gas station to confirm that Parilla was the only person inside the Mercedes when it crashed into the Infiniti.
Parilla remains in custody at the Berkeley County Detention Center.
