Between 2020 and 2024, the Democratic Party lost approximately 2.1 million registered voters in the 30 states plus Washington, D.C. that allow party affiliation, while Republicans gained around 2.4 million, resulting in a net shift in favor of the GOP of 4.5 million voters. The Democratic registration advantage shrank from nearly 11 percentage points to just 6. These losses, observed even in Democratic strongholds and swing states, were especially pronounced among young people, men, and Hispanics, and have been described by analysts as an alarming and sustained situation for the Democratic Party.
