Auckland's economy is struggling, with retail spending data showing a two speed recovery across New Zealand. While rural areas and the South Island benefit from strong demand for exports, the North Island and especially Auckland is falling behind.

The Government is promising renewed focus on growth in urban centres, with a range of initiatives including fast track approvals for infrastructure projects and Reserve Bank interest rate cuts.

One big hope is SailGP. The 2026 event in Auckland is set to expand with larger grandstands, more fans, and a waterfront showcase that could help restore the City of Sails' reputation as a world-class host city.
