Lions are the only big cats that live in large, social groups called prides. A pride is a fission-fusion society, meaning its composition can change over time.

· Core Members: A pride is typically made up of related females (lionesses), their cubs, and a coalition of 1-4 males.
· Male Coalitions: Males often form coalitions (usually brothers from the same litter) to take over and defend a pride from rival males.
· Roles:
· Females: Are the primary hunters and also care for the cubs.
· Males: Are responsible for defending the pride's territory (which they mark by roaring and scent-marking) from intruders. They also defend the pride from other predators like hyenas.
