Toejam & Earl on Sega Genesis Commercial 1991

ToeJam & Earl is a 1991 action video game developed by Johnson Voorsanger Productions and published by Sega for the Genesis console. It centers on ToeJam and Earl, two alien rappers from the planet Funkotron who have crash-landed on Earth and must collect pieces of their wrecked spacecraft to escape.
The game is set in a surreal, isometric world represented by randomly generated floating islands connected by elevators, with the player navigating these islands to find the 10 pieces of their ship.
The gameplay is heavily influenced by the roguelike game Rogue (1980), featuring random level and item generation, and is often considered an example of a roguelike game.

The protagonists, ToeJam (red, three-legged, wearing a backwards baseball cap and a gold medallion) and Earl (orange, stout, wearing high-tops and oversized sunglasses), are portrayed with over-the-top appropriations of 1990s urban culture and speak in California slang.
The game features a funk soundtrack, inspired by artists like Herbie Hancock and The Headhunters, and is known for its originality, humor, and two-player cooperative mode, which was considered innovative at the time.
The game received positive critical acclaim despite low initial sales, building a cult following and becoming one of Sega's second-tier mascots.

The game has been re-released multiple times, including on the Wii's Virtual Console in 2006, and on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade in 2012 as part of the Sega Vintage Collection. It was also re-released on the Nintendo Classics service in 2021.
A sequel, ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove!, was released in 2019, developed independently by Greg Johnson and featuring enhanced gameplay, 4-player co-op, and a focus on a rogue-like adventure with a funk soundtrack.
This game is set in a constantly changing world where players help ToeJam and Earl retrieve the pieces of their Rapmaster Rocket.
