Hyde Park, CA - The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred on the evening of July 10 in the city’s 77th Street Division, following a confrontation involving an armed suspect.

According to a preliminary statement from the LAPD’s Force Investigation Division, the incident took place around 6:20 p.m. near Crenshaw Boulevard, just south of Hyde Park Boulevard. Uniformed officers from the division’s Gang Enforcement Detail observed a man, later identified as 63-year-old James Tullous, exit a parked vehicle while carrying a handgun.

Police say Tullous then walked onto the sidewalk, where he became involved in a physical altercation with another man. As officers moved to intervene, Tullous allegedly fired one round from his weapon. Officers responded with gunfire, striking Tullous, who then fell to the ground.

Officers provided medical aid until Los Angeles Fire Department personnel arrived. Tullous was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the department.

Investigators with the LAPD’s Force Investigation Division later determined that the confrontation had started as a verbal dispute. The victim in the altercation was not injured, and no officers or other community members were harmed during the encounter.

A semi-automatic handgun was recovered at the scene and booked as evidence.
