WTUE HOMEGROWN III – 1982

WTUE’s third “homegrown” collection in as many years continues rock radio’s grand tradition of spotlighting regional talent. Talent that, for one reason or another, has gone largely unheard in the music meccas of New York and Los Angeles. But the importance of these unique local compilations – produced by hundreds of radio stations around the country – should not be underestimated.

These are sound documents that remind us of where we’ve been, where we are and, in some cases, where we’re headed. With some of the groups involved, aspirations far outshine their abilities. With others, the creative spark is most certainly burning.

The best rock ‘n’ roll is felt, not manufactured. It’s hammered out in basements and garages by musicians running more on raw energy than real encouragement. For many, this collection will be their only vinyl reward.

But it’s not important to us whether any of these bands “make it” or not. For us, this record is the thing. A band might show the potential to produce a string of great songs or they may turn out to be one hit wonders. But, if you love music, that one good tune is enough.

Record collectors have known for years about the secret gems that occasionally crop up on these “homegrown” efforts. In the sixties, WTUE’s sister WONE – then a rock station – produced at least one “Dayton Scene” collection that is now a much sought after collectable.

For now, “Homegrown III” is our little secret. But it won’t take long for others to discover what we’ve known for a long time. Dayton rocks from the heartland. ~ Don Reynolds / Dayton Daily News
