FBI RAIDS John Bolton's House And Office For Classified Documents

Federal agents raided the Maryland home and Washington, D.C. office of John Bolton, former national security adviser to President Donald Trump, on Friday, August 22, 2025, as part of a national security investigation into the potential mishandling of classified records. Bolton, who has become a vocal critic of the president since leaving the administration, was not detained or charged with any crime. The FBI confirmed the search was court-authorized, and agents were seen removing boxes from both locations.

The investigation focuses on classified documents, including potential leaks to the media, and was initially launched during the Biden administration but reportedly stalled before being revived under the current Justice Department. FBI Director Kash Patel tweeted, “NO ONE is above the law… @FBI agents on mission,” shortly after the raid began, a message echoed by Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino. The raid bears similarities to the 2022 FBI search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, which the current administration previously criticized as politically motivated; Patel had called that search unlawful. Bolton’s book, The Room Where It Happened, published in 2020, was previously the subject of a Justice Department lawsuit under Trump’s first administration, which argued it contained classified information; the case was dropped in 2021 under Biden. Trump revoked Bolton’s Secret Service protection in January 2025, shortly after taking office for his second term, despite ongoing Iranian threats against Bolton’s life. Trump stated he learned about the raid from the news and reiterated his negative view of Bolton, calling him “not a smart guy” and “a lowlife,” while Bolton’s associates have suggested the search is an act of political retribution.
