Known for his outspoken opposition to the Iraq War, he was expelled from the Labour Party in 2003 and later founded the Respect Party, which he led until 2016. He has produced several documentary films about Haiti and has led numerous delegations to Haiti since 1986 to investigate human rights violations and union struggles.

But more than a quarter of a century later, has the conflict really subsided?
