The KLM A330 is descending into a layer of ground fog

😍. It looks beautiful but can be quite dangerous 😱.

Ground fog forms due to the cooling of the Earth's surface and the adjacent layer of air. The resulting ground fog is called radiation fog. It most often appears at night when there is no sunlight, and the Earth's surface and air lose heat.

Radiation fog is densest near the Earth's surface, and visibility here often deteriorates to just a few dozen meters. The density decreases with altitude, and from flight height, the ground is clearly visible through it.

Ground fog can be treacherous due to the sudden loss of visual references during landing. Of course, for modern aircraft equipped with precise radio navigation aids at the airport, this is not a problem, but in their absence, the crew must be alert 🤓.
