A passenger on an EasyJet flight recorded a volcanic eruption in Iceland on video

Of course, a volcanic eruption by itself, not accompanied by a significant release of volcanic ash, does not pose a danger to aviation.

However, flying into a volcanic ash cloud is very dangerous 😱. Volcanic ash contains particles that, when entering the hot parts of the engine, melt and turn into a glassy mass. This mass settles on engine components, reducing their efficiency or blocking air intakes.

Abrasive ash particles scratch and damage the windshields and transparent surfaces of the cockpit, which can impair visibility.

Moreover, volcanic ash clouds are not visible on regular weather radar screens, so pilots rely entirely on reports and warnings from volcanic activity monitoring services.
