A migrant truck driver from Africa k*lled three people in Nevada after going wrong way on the highway

29-year-old Claude Rafiki veered into oncoming traffic killing motorcyclists near Las Vegas.

The Rwandan-born truck driver does not speak English, but was given a commercial driver's license in Michigan.

The crash happened in March of 2024, when Rafiki drove his semi-truck on the wrong side of the highway for nearly 30 seconds after weaving erratically for about 10 minutes, as seen on his dashcam.

Prosecutors described the truck as a "nuclear bomb on the road," noting Rafiki had lied on his books saying he was switching shifts with another driver, violating hours-of-service rules that are put in place to make sure drivers don't fall asleep at the wheel.
Rafiki k*lled Owen Hart, 22, Athena Taylor, 21—recently engaged and celebrating Hart's birthday—and Jeremy Gebo, 44, all from St. George, Utah, who were part of a group of motorcyclists.

Hart's parents witnessed their son's de*th.

He was charged with three counts of reckless driving resulting in death.

Rafiki initially blamed the wind for veering into oncoming traffic, a claim dismissed by investigators who found he wasn't in the right lane, and that he had an expired medical certification for epilepsy medication the day after the crash, which invalidated his CDL.

Rafiki pleaded guilty in June 2024 and was sentenced by Clark County District Court Judge Joe Hardy to the plea deal of 4 to 10 years in prison plus a $6,000 fine.
