Local archaeologist believes Buffalo may have a "new" oldest tree

That big tree on Franklin Street in Allentown, known as "Buffalo's Oldest Tree" might not be. Archaeologist Dan Cadzow says that there is one in Delaware Park that "might have ten years on it. Dan says that the sycamore tree on Franklin Street is 308 years old and dates back to 1710. The mighty white oak in the park dates back to 1700, making it a decade older. He says "Christmas morning I remembered the tree age calculator on line, so my wife and I came out after presents and we measured it and put in in-we were surprised it's like ten years older than the one on Franklin." The only sure way to determine the tress age would be to drill a core and count the rings, but as Dan points out, that could be risky to the tree "you can give it an infection." While the old tree on Franklin bears the official "oldest" plaque, Dan is pretty sure he knows where to find the actual oldest tree, adding "hopefully they won't put a plaque on it, but maybe near it."
