Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a high-profile meeting, opening a new chapter in bilateral relations ahead of the landmark Shanghai Co-operation Summit (SCO).

On Monday, Wang also emphasised that India and China were ‘partners, not rivals". The talks with Modi came at the end of Wang's two-day visit to New Delhi for the 24th round of discussions with Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, focused on resolving their decades-old border dispute.

The multifaceted agreement was aimed at restoring stability and rebuilding trust between the two giants, after ties appeared strained by a prolonged military standoff and a deadly border clash in 2020. The longstanding border dispute was addressed, with both sides agreeing to jointly uphold peace in border areas through consultations.

In a significant announcement, the leaders declared that direct flights between the two nations, suspended since 2020, will resume as soon as possible, and that border trade at three key points will be reopened.

Modi reiterated his participation in the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin at the end of this month, marking his first visit to China in over seven years.
