Israel calls up 60,000 reservists ahead of planned Gaza City offensive

Israel has called up 60,000 reservists ahead of a planned ground offensive to seize all of Gaza City, with five divisions expected to take part.

Defence Minister Israel Katz approved the operation, which aims to defeat Hamas and secure the release of hostages, though only 20 are believed to still be alive.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are expected to be ordered south, raising international alarm over a worsening humanitarian crisis.

The UN, Red Cross, and aid groups warn of mass displacement, severe malnutrition, and the risk of forcible transfer.

Hamas says it has accepted a proposal for a 60-day truce and partial hostage release, but Israel insists on a comprehensive deal, the BBC has reported.

Fighting has intensified in Gaza City and Jabalia, with Israeli strikes killing civilians and Hamas continuing attacks, as the humanitarian toll mounts.
