Spatial skills are the backbone of geoscience. They let us imagine rivers carving valleys, mountains rising, or ancient rock layers hidden beneath our feet. Yet many students struggle with spatial thinking, and fewer are choosing geoscience careers.

At the University of Canterbury, Katherine Pedley and her team created the Earth Science Garden to change that. This outdoor classroom arranges real rocks in geological formations, turning abstract concepts into hands-on learning. Students map, analyze, and interact with Earth’s story in ways no textbook can match.

Inspired by international models, the garden sparks inclusivity, bridges disciplines, and makes Earth science come alive. It is a living laboratory that could transform how we teach the planet’s history.

We celebrate Katherine Pedley and the UC team for reshaping geoscience education and inspiring the next generation of scientists.
