Ukraine’s Donbas region in the east is at the center of the war with Russia. Luhansk is mostly under Russian control, while Ukraine still holds about 30 percent of Donetsk, including key cities and fortified positions. Both regions are rich in minerals and heavy industry, making them economically important. Strategically, Donbas forms a critical defensive line that stops Russian forces from advancing further west. During his meeting with US President Donald Trump in Alaska last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly demanded that Ukraine hand over control of Donbas to Russia. Ukrainian leaders, including President Zelensky, have rejected the demand, warning that surrendering the region would be a major setback and could enable further Russian attacks.
