From 1969 to 1971, Native activists known as the Indians of All Tribes occupied Alcatraz Island, demanding treaty rights and building a new community of resistance. Led by Richard Oakes, LaNada Means, and John Trudell, they held the Rock for 19 months and changed federal Indian policy forever. Today, as Trump calls to reopen Alcatraz as a prison, their legacy is more urgent than ever.
