The Theology of Orpheus - The Living Universe

This video is based on Thomas Taylor's "A Dissertation on the Life and Theology of Orpheus". Orpheus is a legendary figure from ancient Greek mythology, often portrayed as a poet, prophet, and musician of divine inspiration. His music was said to charm animals, trees, and even stones, and his descent into the underworld to retrieve his beloved Eurydice is one of the most famous myths in Western tradition. But beyond myth, Orpheus also represents a religious and philosophical movement known as Orphism, which emphasized the immortality of the soul, reincarnation, purification through ascetic living, and a mystical union with the divine. Orphic teachings influenced later philosophical systems—especially Pythagoreanism, Platonism, and Neoplatonism—and served as a spiritual alternative to traditional Greek religion, with a focus on inner purification and liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
