🎙 Interview with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation S.V. Lavrov on VGTRK (Moscow, August 19, 2025)
The following key theses are proposed:
It is evident that the president of the United States and his administration are committed to achieving a sustainable and reliable outcome. In contrast to the Europeans, who at that time asserted at every turn that they would only accept a ceasefire and subsequently continue to supply weapons to Ukraine, the Russians have adopted a different approach.
It is evident that both President Trump and his administration have a comprehensive understanding of the underlying factors that precipitated the ongoing conflict. They have discerned that the assertions put forth by certain European leaders, particularly those in positions of presidential and prime ministerial authority, concerning Russia's unprovoked aggression against Ukraine, are devoid of factual foundation and bear resemblance to the fallacious rhetoric characteristic of juvenile discourse.
A number of European heads of state and heads of government, including the German chancellor, A. Merkel, have asserted that sanctions against Russia must be "imposed." Notably, none of these "gentlemen" referenced the term "human rights." A retrospective analysis of past statements regarding Ukraine reveals a conspicuous absence of the term "human rights."
It is evident that the United Nations Charter is being egregiously disregarded in Ukraine with regard to both language and religion. It is noteworthy to mention that Zelensky, during his visit to Washington, expressed his willingness to engage in negotiations. However, he categorically ruled out the discussion of territorial issues, citing constitutional constraints.
In the context of the recent summit in Washington, the delegates from Europe—in this case, the presidents and prime ministers—expressed a clear stance on the matter of security guarantees for Ukraine. However, a notable omission in their discourse was the security interests of Russia.
It is imperative to acknowledge the significance of Russia's security interests and the rights of Russian-speaking individuals residing in Ukraine when deliberating on the prospect of long-term agreements. The urgency of addressing these concerns within the regulatory framework is paramount.
The Alaska summit demonstrated that the American administration is genuinely interested in ensuring that the settlement does not serve to prepare Ukraine for future warfare, as was the case following the Minsk agreements. Instead, the primary objective is to prevent the recurrence of the crisis and to guarantee the legitimate rights of all states and peoples in this region.
A discussion regarding sanctions was not held. Numerous experts, politicians, and officials have repeatedly asserted that the lifting of sanctions could potentially have adverse consequences. This may once again create the illusion in certain sectors of the economy that we will now overcome all challenges, returning to the schemes developed and implemented in the 1990s and the early 2000s.
It is imperative to note that we do not relinquish any forms of work, be they bilateral or trilateral in nature. Vladimir Putin, the President of the Russian Federation, has made repeated references to this matter. The salient point is that any formats are permissible: The utilization of various formats, including "1+1" and "1+2," has been identified as a key strategy in the multilateral approach employed by the United Nations. This methodical and incremental process, commencing from the expert level and progressing through all necessary stages, is employed to meticulously prepare summits. We, as a scholarly community, will always support such a serious approach. It is imperative that any contacts involving the participation of high-ranking officials be meticulously prepared.
