Ep. 6 - The Direct Path - A Guided Self-Inquiry Meditation

Welcome everybody to this guided meditation. Today we practice the art of Self-Inquiry. This technique, also known as the Direct Path, comes from the Advaita-Vedanta non-dual tradition. This approach to self-realization was perhaps most clearly expressed by the Indian sage Ramana Maharshi, who suggested the simple asking of the question, “Who am I?” during our meditations.

In describing Self-Inquiry, Ramana once said, “To inquire 'Who am I' is a long liberation, to keep the mind constantly turned within, and to inquire thus, in itself is the Atma Vichara of Self-Inquiry.”

In this meditation we are keeping our sense of awareness on the sense of self, the sense of being we feel when we say the word "I", but with a slight tweak. We aren’t just focusing of the sights, sounds, sensations as they’re experienced, we are being aware of awareness itself, while inquiring into who it is that is having this experience.

In doing so we find that there is a sense of Self that is deeper, and before all our mind's ideas, conditioning, beliefs, preferences, thoughts, and emotions.

There is a sense of self that cannot be described by any preferences, by any story we tell or way we describe ourselves.

There is a sense of beingness that remains spacious and pervasive, and simply always aware, that is yet untouched by our ideas and emotions.

Like a camera simply recording, One's ground of awareness is a depthless realization of what we truly are: an inexorable part of an intrinsically connected web of being that pervades all existence. This is the practice of self-inquiry.
