THE LAST FLY OF FLIGHT 24 & FLIGHT 40

Near Zheleznogorsk, on September 18, 1981, both aircraft were in the same air sector. The Antonov An-24 was traveling with Aeroflot passengers on a scheduled flight. The Yak-40 was on a transport mission for the military. The two aircraft were vectored onto convergent flight paths as a result of an error by air traffic control (ATC) and a lack of proper separation. An-24 and Yak-40 collided in midair around 12:48 local time. The collision destroyed both aircraft instantly. Numerous areas in and around Zheleznogorsk were hit by wrecks.
