Netanyahu Says He’s ‘Very Much’ Attached to the Vision of 'Greater Israel'

Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that he considers himself to be on a “historic and spiritual mission” and that he is “very” connected to the idea of “Greater Israel,” a vision for significant Israeli territorial expansion in the region.

In Netanyahu, imagination, his god says, Greater Israel refer to Israel taking complete control of Gaza, the West Bank, and the Golan Heights. But for more ideological Zionists, including members of Netanyahu’s government, Greater Israel means Israeli expansion into Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, parts of Africa and Saudi Arabia, based on their biblical interpretation.

On May 14, 1948, David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the creation of the State of Israel. The country met with a great deal of international opposition as well as some support, as a potential haven for the many victims of the German persecution of Europeans of the Jewish faith, in Europe.

Ashkenazi Jews are a major group within the Jewish religious diaspora, tracing their ancestry to Central and Eastern Europe, including Germany, France, and Poland. They are known for their distinctive culture, including the practice of Yiddish and Hasidic traditions. The term "Ashkenazi" derives from the Hebrew word for Germany, reflecting their historical roots in that region.

Global Presence: Ashkenazi Jews are a significant part of the global European Jewish community, with many now living in North America and Israel.
