Labor Activist Christian Smalls: U.S. Unions Must Do More For The Palestinian Cause

Since Israel launched its genocide nearly two years ago, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition has made repeated attempts to break Israel’s criminal blockade of Gaza.

The Coalition's most recent attempt ended on July 26, when Israeli pirates seized the Handala in international waters. The Handala carried humanitarian aid for Gaza, as well as twenty-one human rights activists.

One of those activists, Christian Smalls, experienced particularly violent treatment at the hands of his Israeli captors. Christian, who was the only Black person on the Handala, is the founder of the Amazon Labor Union, the first independent, democratic, worker-led labor union in American history.

Dimitri Lascaris spoke with Christian about his experiences in Israeli captivity. They also discussed the need for U.S. labor unions to do much more for the Palestinian cause.
