🚨UPDATE on the Alberta expense receipts issue

Premier Danielle Smith was asked about the bizarre change to the longstanding transparency policy at the Alberta Next panel in Edmonton

Remember - itemized receipts are essential for taxpayers to hold government spending to account

The quiet change made on August 1, the Friday of the Long Weekend, deletes the requirement for politicians and government officials to post their receipts online.

Smith said she would reverse that:

“I’m confused by that too. We are going to be discussing that memo when we go to cabinet on Tuesday. There are a number of my ministers who go to the same hotels when they are frequenting different municipalities and they just wanted the name of the hotel redacted just in case people were tracking them down. That was what the policy was supposed to be - it turned out to be something quite different. So we are going to try to track down how that happened and do a reversal on that.”
