After surviving the bombing that claimed most of his family, Alaa knew he had to get his only surviving sister out of Gaza. But leaving meant facing a new kind of danger. At the checkpoint, he was separated from her, blindfolded, beaten, and forced to kneel for hours in the scorching sun. When they finally let him go, he ran to find her, the only family he had left. Together, they made it to the south, and eventually to Egypt, seeking treatment for his injuries and safety for them both. But he says Gaza itself has been left unrecognizable — not a battlefield, but a place deliberately reduced to ruin.
