Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin face-to-face

On August 15th, 2025, at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska, a highly anticipated meeting took place. U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin stood face-to-face in a high-stakes summit, aiming — or at least promising — to find a way out of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Originally, the summit was planned as a one-on-one meeting. But last-minute adjustments turned it into a ‘three-on-three’ format.
President Trump was joined by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff. On the Russian side: Finance Minister Anton Siluanov and sovereign wealth fund head Kirill Dmitriev.
This change reflects a mix of political security and economic ambition at the table.

En route to Alaska, President Trump told reporters: ‘I won’t be happy if there’s no ceasefire today. I just want the killing to stop.’
He added that if talks stalled, he would walk away. But if the meeting proved successful, he’d immediately call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders to discuss the next steps.

Yet, as the two leaders shook hands on Alaska’s red carpet, fighting raged on.
Ukraine claimed strikes on a refinery in Syzran and a vessel carrying drone components in Astrakhan. Russia retaliated with a ballistic missile on Dnipropetrovsk, causing heavy casualties.
It’s a stark contrast: diplomacy on display, warfare in reality.

Alaska is not just a meeting point — it’s a symbol. Once part of the Russian Empire, sold to the United States in 1867, it has long been a frontier between East and West.
Choosing Alaska for the summit signals an attempt to bridge geopolitical divides, right on the doorstep between the two powers.

Beyond peace, Trump floated the idea of renewed economic cooperation with Russia. But he made one condition clear: progress on peace in Ukraine must come first.
It’s both a diplomatic bargaining chip and a potential economic incentive.

The Alaska summit is a grand display of diplomacy, balancing the goals of peace, power, and public image.
The world now waits: Will this be the turning point that ends the war? Or just another performance in the theater of global politics?
We may not have to wait long for the answer.
