The epicenter was near Mandalay, a city with over 1 million residents. The quake's hypocenter lay just 10 km below the surface, making the seismic shock extremely powerful. In central and northwestern Myanmar, over 10,000 buildings were either destroyed or severely damaged. Roads and bridges collapsed, temples, mosques, and centuries-old historic monuments crumbled. Mandalay International Airport was shut down after its control tower collapsed. Power and phone lines went completely dead. Train tracks twisted like they were made of plasticine. Landslides cut off regions from the outside world. All this made it extremely difficult — or even impossible — for rescuers and humanitarian aid to reach affected areas in time. With limited specialized equipment, both rescue workers and relatives of those trapped in the rubble had to dig by hand, enduring extreme heat above 40°C and a lack of food and water. As of April 2, official figures report 3,003 dead and over 4,600 injured. However, the true scale of devastation and loss of life may be much higher. Words cannot fully capture the horror unfolding in the region. With hospitals destroyed, medics treated the wounded out in the open. Bodies trapped under debris began decomposing in the heat. The earthquake has worsened an already dire humanitarian crisis in Myanmar. This quake ranks among the most powerful in the country's history over the past century and has drawn expert attention due to its unusual characteristics. It triggered a rupture up to 400 km long along the Sagaing Fault, which runs north to south through Myanmar. The rupture's propagation speed was comparable to that of a supersonic jet. A seismologist from the Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences classified this event as a "supershear" earthquake — an extremely rare type in which rupture energy moves through the ground at exceptional speed. Arkansas saw 10 tornadoes, including two EF4s — an event unseen for 28 years. #Peru Heavy rains triggered floods, mudslides, and landslides. On March 12, a mudslide buried 100 meters of a key highway linking Peru and Brazil. On March 8, an extreme downpour in the city of Portoviejo, Manabí province, left some areas flooded up to an adult's neck. However, on March 4, it unexpectedly turned westward and headed toward the Australian coast. In Gold Coast, flooding turned city streets into rivers, and bull sharks appeared in the floodwaters. In Brisbane, 275 mm of rain fell in just 24 hours, making it the wettest day in 50 years. Spain Since late February, Spain has been hit by heavy rains, snowstorms, and floods. The regions of Murcia, Andalusia, and Valencia recorded record rainfall, reaching up to 258 L/m² in Castellón province. In Lorca, one person died while attempting to drive through a flooded riverbed. In Soria, around 500 vehicles were stranded. Japan On February 26, a wildfire broke out in the city of Ofunato, engulfing 2,100 hectares. Nearly 1,700 firefighters and 18 helicopters were deployed to battle the flames. A total of 84 buildings were damaged, and one person lost their life. February saw record-low precipitation in Ofunato — less than 10% of the normal level — worsening the fire hazard. Tropical Cyclone "Garance" On February 28, Tropical Cyclone "Garance" struck Réunion Island. Winds of up to 214 km/h and torrential rains destroyed infrastructure. Around 180,000 homes were left without electricity, water, and communication, and four people lost their lives. Southern Hemisphere On February 25, six tropical cyclones were simultaneously active in the Indian and Pacific Oceans — an event unseen in decades. This season has been exceptionally intense, with 22 recorded cyclones whose total energy is 30% above normal (according to the ACE scale). On February 5, an earthquake of magnitude 3.1 was recorded near the Italian supervolcano Campi Flegrei, just outside its volcanic caldera. The earthquake's hypocenter was at a depth of about 2 km. Over the course of five weeks, 281 earthquakes with magnitudes of up to 3.3 were recorded in the region, indicating increased seismic activity. Concerns are growing over the state of this volcanic caldera because nearly half a million people live in the red zone, directly adjacent to the volcano. This surge in volcanic activity can be explained by several factors: 1. According to reports from the National Weather Service, over the course of 72 hours, some areas in the Sierra Nevada received more than 7 feet of snow. Due to the massive accumulation of snow, some vehicles were stranded on the roads on March 1st, and drivers required urgent assistance 📍Pakistan. In late February and early March, Pakistan experienced heavy rains and snowfall, leading to widespread landslides and destruction in the northern and western regions. According to official figures, 37 people died, and 50 were injured. A state of emergency was declared in Rawalpindi, Punjab province, as the city received more than a third of the monthly precipitation norm, totaling 0,98 inches. 📍Turkey. On the evening of March 5th in Antalya, Turkey, a storm occurred, during which two water spouts formed. Coming ashore, they caused damage to the areas of Demre, Kumluca, Finike, and Manavgat.
