Why Telling Your Doctor About Low Carb is Important
https://mysugarfreejourney.com/why-telling-your-doctor-about-low-carb-is-important/
Sometimes I live in a bubble. I'm just doing my thing for my health, watching myself lose weight and get healthier and I forget that the idea that a low carb diet isn't the frontline treatment for obesity in the minds of most doctors. Then I see a case study like the one that just came across my desk and get reminded how important it is to try to get these ideas out as far and wide as possible.
This case study involved a 42 year old man who just had a heart attack, is 5'11" and 258 pounds. His doctors put him on a 1500 kcal/day diet and he walks his dog every day. If you believe weight loss is entirely controlled by calories in/calories out, this is a good plan. However, it probably doesn't surprise you if you've actually tried to lose weight this way, it didn't work. Here's the money quote.
"Over the past 7 months, he has been trying to follow a diet of 1500 kcal per day and has walked his dog daily for 30 minutes. However, he finds it difficult to adhere to the diet, primarily because of frequent cravings for sweet snacks; he has lost only 2 kg of weight."
In 7 months of trying his best to follow his doctor's orders, this poor man lost less than 5 lbs and this is after a heart attack so I bet he was pretty motivated. To make matters worse, the case study is presented as a debate for the next course of action and the only 2 options debated are a GLP-1 inhibitor like Semaglutide or Bariatric surgery. So a drug with scary side effects or invasive surgery. Wow.
Any diet that seeks to control calories will usually work in the short term but fail long term. You shouldn't be trying to control calories, you need to control your hunger. A diet that includes sugar, processed grains and seed oils will fail because the carbs make you hungrier faster. You need to eat foods that fill you up quickly and satiate your hunger for longer. The diet that does that better than any other that I have tried is one with large amounts of animal based protein and maybe a few veggies if you want them.
Eating a diet with no sugar, grains, starches or seed oils will control your hunger and the meat will fill you up and keep you full. No more having to snack every 2 hours between meals, no more getting hungry right before you go to bed. Perhaps most importantly, no more having a doctor tell you the only options are a pill or surgery. You can be in charge of your health and you won't need a doctor or anyone else's help to repair your health.
