"Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens" is spoken by the character Gimli in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring.
This exchange occurs during the Council of Elrond, as the Fellowship is being formed and preparing to depart from Rivendell.
Gimli delivers the line in response to concerns about the perils of the journey ahead, expressing his belief in unwavering loyalty and perseverance through hardship.

Elrond, however, offers a more cautious perspective, replying, "Maybe, but let him not vow to walk in the dark, who has not seen the nightfall," suggesting that one should not make binding promises about enduring trials they have not yet faced.
The dialogue continues with Gimli arguing that a sworn word can strengthen a fearful heart, to which Elrond counters that it could also break it.

This exchange illustrates Tolkien's thematic exploration of the limits of proverbs and oaths, highlighting how traditional wisdom can be both inspiring and potentially misguided depending on context.
