Saint Maximilian Kolbe, a Franciscan priest and publisher devoted to the Virgin Mary, was arrested by the Nazi regime for sheltering Jewish refugees and promoting Christian resistance to evil. Sent to Auschwitz, he endured starvation, brutality, and dehumanization. Yet he never surrendered the love of Christ.

When another prisoner was randomly chosen to die, Kolbe stepped forward.

“I am a Catholic priest,” he said. “Let me take his place.”

That act of love would echo through history.
