Hey everyone, it’s Leaflit! In today’s video, I’m reacting to Hero Hei’s deep dive “Steam just got hit with disturbing censorship,” where he reveals how payment giants like VISA, MasterCard, and PayPal are pressuring Steam to pull certain content—especially adult-only and taboo-themed games.
Valve quietly updated its rules to ban “content that may violate the rules and standards set forth by Steam’s payment processors.” Overnight, several (mainly incest-themed) adult games vanished from the storefront. Now, devs and creators are worried—this could extend to queer, transgressive, even mainstream titles with mature content. We’re not just talking about porn—we’re talking about invisible financial gatekeepers shaping what we’re allowed to see and buy.
New Valve rule: Steam now prohibits “content that may violate payment processors’ standards,” a vague policy that follows Visa/Mastercard outcry over certain games.
Evidence of impact: Dozens of incest-themed and other adult titles were removed, likely in response to financial pressure.
Community backlash: Developers and users on Steam, Reddit, and PC Gamer are raising alarm—this could easily extend to mature, queer, or niche content, threatening creative freedom.
Historical echo: We’ve seen this before—OnlyFans, Tumblr, and Patreon all succumbed to payment processor censorship. Now Steam is next.
Financial gatekeeping: VISA and Mastercard are now indirectly setting content standards—an alarming expansion of corporate censorship.
Creative chilling effect: Developers are terrified; the vague policy threatens everything from queer narratives to gothic horror.
Urgency for transparency: Valve must clarify what’s banned—and resist financially driven content policing.
Community call-out: Leaflit urges viewers to press Valve for transparency, support indie devs, and push back against backend censorship.
