Surah Al-Qalam is the 68th chapter of the Holy Qur'an, revealed in Makkah. These opening verses are a powerful defense of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ against false accusations from his enemies. Allah ﷻ swears by the pen—a symbol of knowledge, truth, and preservation of guidance—that the Prophet ﷺ is free from any madness, and instead is the best example of character.

Arabic Recitation:
نٓ ۚ وَٱلۡقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسۡطُرُونَ (1) مَآ أَنتَ بِنِعۡمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجۡنُونٖ (2) وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجۡرًا غَيۡرَ مَمۡنُونٖ (3) وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٖ (4)

Transliteration:
Nūn. Wa-l-qalami wa mā yasṭurūn (1) Mā anta bini‘mati rabbika bimajnūn (2) Wa inna laka la-ajran ghayra mamnūn (3) Wa innaka la‘alā khuluqin ‘aẓīm (4)

Meaning:

Verse 1: Allah swears by the pen and all that is written, showing the value of knowledge.

Verse 2: The Prophet ﷺ is declared innocent of madness—he is guided by Allah’s mercy.

Verse 3: A guarantee of eternal, unceasing reward for his efforts.

Verse 4: A testimony from Allah Himself to the noble and unmatched character of the Prophet ﷺ.
